An exciting opportunity has arisen at Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia, in partnership with Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Norfolk and Waveney health system, for a Clinical Associate Professor in Cardiac Electrophysiology to develop and deliver a nationally competitive clinical-academic programme in arrhythmia mechanisms, risk stratification, advanced cardiac imaging, electroanatomical mapping and catheter-based treatment.
This position is based within the Norwich Research Park and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, offering access to a vibrant multidisciplinary clinical-academic community. The role presents a unique opportunity to build translational cardiac electrophysiology research while maintaining specialist clinical practice within a supportive academic and healthcare environment.
Norwich has a growing cardiovascular research landscape spanning cardiac magnetic resonance, 4D flow MRI, cardiovascular haemodynamics, arrhythmia, valve disease, heart failure, preventive cardiology, data science and clinical trials. The appointee will be expected to align with and strengthen the advanced CMR and haemodynamics programme led by Pankaj Garg and the cardiovascular clinical research programme led by Professor Vassilios Vassiliou, while developing an independent electrophysiology research portfolio.
You will work closely with clinical and scientific colleagues across Norwich Medical School, NNUH, the Norwich Research Park, the Norwich Clinical Trials Unit and the NIHR Norfolk Clinical Research Facility to expand internationally competitive cardiovascular research and contribute to high-quality clinical care, education and research impact.
Role focus
- Develop and lead an academic cardiac electrophysiology programme in atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, AF ablation, arrhythmia substrate, electroanatomical mapping, device-related rhythm management and patient-centred outcomes.
- Contribute clinically to EP/arrhythmia clinics, electrophysiology laboratory sessions, procedural planning, MDTs, clinical governance, audit, teaching and service development at NNUH.
- Build collaborative programmes with cardiovascular imaging, 4D flow MRI, non-invasive haemodynamics, statistics, data science, health economics, implementation science and clinical trials colleagues.
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, postgraduate supervision, external grant applications, high-quality publications and School/Faculty/University leadership activities.
You will hold full GMC registration and licence to practice (or eligibility) and be a GMC Specialist Register in Cardiology or have eligibility for entry within six months of appointment.
You will have your CCT in Cardiology (or CCT expected within six months) along with advanced subspecialty training in cardiac electrophysiology and arrhythmia management.
You will also be a current or recent clinical-academic role or equivalent trajectory, for example NIHR Clinical Lecturer, Academic Clinical Fellow progression, externally funded fellowship or comparable clinical academic appointment.
The post is available immediately on an indefinite, full-time basis.
The clinical-academic balance will be agreed through job planning; an approximately 60% clinical component is anticipated, including agreed clinical SPA/administration and on-call commitments, but may be adjusted by agreement according to service requirements, CCT/consultant status, external funding and the appointee's development plan.
